[Fixed][SVN R4246] Game hangs

Postby mnk » 19 May 2010 11:29

I haven't been really playing for awhile, so I'm not sure when it happened, but
Hexen hangs after about 5min. of gameplay on 1st level 3rd difficulty.
It happens in various places of the level - I play on a rather lazy pace,
so for me it happens a bit after getting the 1st key.

Oops, I forgot - it's on Linux. It's only vavoom, that freezes; after it's killed,
after restoring resolution, everything else seems to work fine.
If I switch to a different console while it's frozen, screen stays black when I switch back.

On a not related topic: I rarely post here, so sometimes I forget the password.
I think the algorithm for generating confirmation picture has changed, cause it's
almost unreadable now.

Some possible causes:

- screensaver ? Occasionally screensavers do strange things. Have you tried it with screensaver disabled ?
- Does it hang even if you do nothing, just leave your character standing still ? Just go to an area monsters can't enter so you don't get killed by a spawned monster. One such area is the staircase behind first (creaky) door.
- You mention it hangs after a while. Monster spawning happens once in a few minutes. Could it be related ?
--------

Just throwing random ideas.

First option is quite impossible for two reasons:
- as the game runs, I'm using both mouse and keyboard
- only "screensaver" here is xserver's screen blanking
As for the third, well, it's an idea (I was thinking about it too,
but didn't have a proof in either direction).
I'll see later about the second...
and it looks like we may have a winner - if I simply stay in one place,
without triggering any of the monsters, the freeze still happens after awhile.
So it looks like it may be related to spawning, as that's one of the few time-based
events that will still happen.

In case it's important - freeze affects both video and sound.

Just one question, are you using Timidity for music playback? I don't know if it's related, but I was having freezes when developing the fixes for the crashes on Windows when the music tried to loop, could you please try to confirm if the music ends and loops correctly if possible?

If your game freezes, then I would suggest to play without music, just to test if that could be the problem.

Indeed, vavoom ran with '-nomusic' doesn't hang within about six minutes,
which is 2 min. more than it usually takes till the freeze.

OK, seems fixed in r4283.

Fixed. The problem was the Timidity infinite loop :).
