Wild goose chase...

Postby Col.J.P. » 31 Jan 2002 00:30

Greetings Gentlemen<br>This may very well be a shot in the dark, but is there any chance that the Vavoom engine may, one day, work with the full retail version of Strife?<br>This is currently the only Doom-engine based game with no port of any kind (opengl/D3D/3dfx)...I think that the source code was never released...Is this the reason?<br>I really like  Vavoom in Doom and Heretic, and I really miss Strife(never been able to finish it)...<br>I would be a blast if you guys could be able to improved this great old RPG!<br>Thank you very much for your attention.<br>Sincerely yours<br><br>                J.P. :'(

Ahhh, your guess is correct.  They say the reason they haven't been able to completely support is is because of the very fact that the source was never released.  I suppose if they do release the source code for Strife, 'twould be much much easier to get better compatibility with it. :P

Some things (like mobjinfos) can be stripped from the executable.<br><br>Dialogs and such have to be investigated by men. I don't really see any way to get them out of the game easily - it requires playing game a lot and reproducing all you saw...<br><br>Other ideas?

Yes, the list of things, states, sprite names, animations, switches etc were stripped from executable.<br><br>Dialogs are stored in wad lumps and I know the format except the meaning of some data. Background pic name is created from sprite name. The only problem is commands.

Well...It seems to be a gigantic task then...Never mind.<br>I only asked because another guy made a D3D port for<br>Darkforces, a couple of years ago, without any source code(never been released either). It was quite impressive, but he never finished it though...<br>I already mailed to Rogue, but did

The major problems I encountered were exactly the lack of sound wads...Vavoom engine was

I might be wrong (don't have Strife installed so can't check it), but I remember some dialogs with the Oracle were there as well.

I must say that I don't know what Oracle is since I have only the shareware version. I discovered Strife only about a year ago and I have no idea where I could get the full version  :(

I only have the pirated version with speech ripped off, still it's about 50mb... would be very hard to find the full [legal] one, indeed.
